Have you ever seen those tall sand dunes behind the Hotel Del Coronado? Turns out they spell “Coronado” from aerial view! They were built by city worker, Armando Moreno, who was originally supposed to remove the kelp beds that washed up on the beach. In the 80’s he decided to creatively arrange the dunes to spell out “Coronado Beach” and sow it with ice plants to keep it in place. City workers continue to keep the message intact, however, the word ‘Beach” has faded over time.
This picture was taken by Molly and Jenny Cooper in 2011 and was the first time the creator got a chance to see his own work in the way that it was meant to be seen. So the next time you’re at Coronado Beach take a moment in to realize these aren’t random heaps of sand. This may even be a perfect opportunity for an awesome aerial shot if you carry a photo drone!
